A Novel Model for Detecting Urban Fringe and Its Expanding Patterns: An Application in Harbin City, China

Urban fringe is an active expanding belt, indicating urban-rural interaction processes. Previous studies have attempted to define urban as the transitional area between and rural areas, but there a lack of quantitative analysis periphery boundaries. We developed novel, Spatial Segmentation Model (SSM), detect extent via calculating share built-up land. Within fringe, we statistically compared number patches in each direction described four patterns (stable, sprawling, leaping, mixing patterns) indicated by empirical analysis. The results show that this model can reliably could reveal growth characteristics. find spatial territory changes are highly relative with transport infrastructures Harbin. Meanwhile, roads density core higher than fringe. Especially for city roads, more 4 times closely related development social economies well space policies plans designed governments. Similar post-industry cities worldwide, Harbin should take action address population decline. Effective land-use suitable strategies play important role alleviating shrinkage. Thus, understanding dynamics, patterns, driving factors help us form basis future development.
